This was posted to gears_and_steam (a steampunk art/info/link community I run): free printable props (very clever!) and a free font pack (pay fonts also available, but the free ones are actually very nice-looking).

This SF Chronicle writeup of Kublacon is refreshing because it's essentially gamer-positive. |

hoshizora pointed out this alternative RPG combat system to me: http://bayn.org/wushu/wushu-open.html
unkyrich and assaultdoor should check it out. (Mechanics make my eyes glaze over, even alternative dice-light mechanics, which is why I'm not taking assaultdoor and siderealengine on any more long car trips. *G*) |

None of these are a perfect fit for quietcompany, naturally enough. Some are too comedic, too comic-booky, too whimsical, too dark, etc. But, all together, you can get a certain amount of the flavor from these. I've starred them ranging from very (***) to slightly (*) relevant. A ? means I haven't actually seen/read it yet myself. Some of them I don't remember too well, because it's been too long. I'm sure I'm missing some really good ones that I haven't seen yet or have seen and forgotten. Suggestions?
TV shows and anime ***Supernatural **Buffy **Witch Hunter Robin *Neverwhere *Asagiri no Miko *X-Files ? Angel
Movies ***Constantine ***The Frighteners *Hellboy *Dogma *Practical Magic NOT good movies, but thematically very appropriate, and included because I can't think of many movies: ***Legend of Hell House ***Rose Red
Books( Cut for length )
Comic books and manga ***Hellblazer **Aria **Tarot Cafe **Hellshock *Hellboy *Fables *Primal Force *Books of Magic

I remember using pencils as crude dice in pseudo-RPGs in junior high, but this is quite different!
"Battle Pencils," with stats, add-on familiars, etc. From Japan, naturally!

What should an RPG book have in it--what kind of organization should it have? In particular, what do you like to see in the first few pages? Any pet peeves, things you don't see often enough, etc.?
We're not talking about a supplement, but a main rulebook introducing a world/setting, etc.
I have some things I don't like, but I think most people do, so I thought consulting you guys might be the best thing. Clint's working on a project, and he's curious.

DC has apparently declined to give refunds to people with advance memberships who were unable to attend because of Hurricane Katrina.
I know cons may have high overhead which they count on being covered by the advance sales. But you would think they could do something here. Seems like rather bad PR.

| You scored as Storyteller. You're more inclined toward the role playing side of the equation and less interested in numbers or experience points. You're quick to compromise if you can help move the story forward, and get bored when the game slows down for a long planning session. You want to play out a story that moves like it's orchestrated by a skilled novelist or film director.

I'd say the description is actually quite accurate.

Here's some good game fodder:
The Epoch Times is reporting that dragons have been sighted over Tibet! Complete with photos.
(Context: The Epoch Times is reputedly run by Falun Gong members, meaning that a) they're not particularly critical thinkers and they believe in magic, plus b) they have a political interest in promoting other groups oppressed by the Chinese government.)

Posted to gears_and_steam: Metafilter links on Athanasius Kircher, a real 17th-century eccentric genius who was very much of the Invisible College type.
